Author: thedbf
Subject: Attandance question
Posted: 17-05-2012 at 17:48

I think the cost is the most significant factor in regards lower crowds, £15 is a lot of money for what is on offer IMO, where I believe if it was £12, numbers would increase. As for the coverage in the local papers, until they start giving it the same coverage as the other professional sports in the town, then nothing will change, cause at the moment it gets no more coverage than the local amateur football does.

Unfortunately, Ice Hockey won't sell many papers, where what happens at Dens and Tannadump probably does. As for awareness, thats a double edged sword, those who are interested know about it, those who don't, once they find out how much it costs to watch, won't be that keen to come anyway, so to summarise, the cost of entry IMO is the biggest factor.

    Author: david rennie
Subject: Attandance question
Posted: 17-05-2012 at 17:36

Interesting topic here.

So it appears there are 3 main reasons for the poor crowds:

1. Cost

2. Standard of play

3. Lack of awareness

Cost is obviously crucial - more so now than ever before. In the early BNL days entry was £8 for an adult, and the hockey on offer was a better standard than it is now plus there was the added bonus of a successful team. Add those two together and you were getting average crowds of 1600.

The hockey on offer these last two seasons hasn't been worthy of the £15 entry fee but the club does have costs which need to be met. The early bird season ticket takes the game price down to £12 per game - a realistic price, but not everyone can shell out £324 in one go, although you can pay in installments

The lack of awareness must be a concern. What are the club doing to combat this? The partnership with DFC is a good start and will hit an audience of 2000+ season ticket holders. The school visits don't appear to have worked, although I may be wrong. It was mentioned at the Forum in March that Stars need to look outwith Dundee - get out there in Forfar, Arbroath, Perth and all the surrounding areas. I know fans who come and watch the Stars from Montrose and even Aberdeen so there is a market there, but what are the club doing to get more? The Tele's exposure of the Stars has improved over the last season. Can more be done to utilise the two radio stations - Tay and WAVE?
I can't come up with any ideas cause i'm no expert on marketing but we need someone WHO IS, involved with the club to go out there and make things happen.

The things that happened in the BNL to get crowds in need to be done again whether they have been done before or not. We have to remember we had 5 or 6 years without professional ice hockey and people may have lost interest. These people are the ones we need to get back into the rink

But, to be brutally honest, it hasn't exactly been a successful 2 seasons in the Elite League so far, and I would go as far as to say that the hockey being dished up last season, particularly under Dan's leadership, was boring and uninteresting to the point of driving away the not-so-committed fans.
Basically, put a successful team on the ice and the attendances will rise, but to put a successful team on the ice you need the cash inflow from the larger crowds, so its a catch 22 situation in a way.

Maybe this season will be a 'fresh start' now that we'll be seeing a new coach in place (hopefully soon), and we can get a different style of hockey brought in that might actually be entertaining and exciting to watch. After the last 2 seasons it can only get better(?)
