It’s been an exciting off season for the Dundee CSS Stars Scottish National League (SNL) affiliate Dundee Comets. An upgraded playing squad combined with an enhanced league set-up points to an exciting season ahead at the Dundee Ice Arena.

The reloaded Dundee Comets drop the puck on their 2010/11 SNL campaign this coming Sunday down at the “Old Barn” in Kirkcaldy when they go toe to toe with the Kirkcaldy Kestrals. The Fife outfit who are the current SNL champions represent a tough early challenge for the retooled Comets.

Despite the challenge ahead there is a degree of optimism in the Comets camp after the addition of some high class young talent this off-season. The squad strengthening starts between the pipes where former Stars favourite Mathew Michie will be defending the twine. Mathew offers a big chunk of experience despite his relatively young age and should be a significant addition to the backstopping position. So far the popular goalie has looked solid in his tune-ups for the new season.

Also parachuting in from the Dundee Stars albeit the 2009/10 edition are young gun forwards Grant Reekie, Ross McIntosh and Jonathan Hogan. All three continued to make significant progress last season and there will be similar expectations this time around.

Comets coach Barry Carnegie indicated that he is delighted with the new additions but was quick to point out the importance of teamwork and the strong base established last season: “Hockey is essentially a team game and I think we are definitely moving towards being a more cohesive unit. Not surprisingly this always takes a bit of time.” Barry continued: “we are coming off a pretty strong season last year and we already have in place a number of good young players. There is no doubt the additions will help and we are delighted to have them all on board, but with any team game they are just another piece in the puzzle.”

The Scottish National League is getting stronger as the depth of talent continues to grow. This year 10 teams will compete to become the Scottish amateur champions meaning that the challenge faced by the Comets will be huge, nonetheless it’s likely that they will once again be among the main contenders.
