Welcome to the fifth instalment of the Dundee Stars A-Z series. This week we bring you the very brief list of all the players in Stars history, whose names begin with the letter ‘E’.

PLAYERS

Edmonds, Ben – Dundonian forward who came through the Dundee Stars Juniors system and at age, 17 made his debut for the club. Ben made 13 appearances in the 2015-2016 season and contributed 3 points, scoring twice. As a two-way player, Edmonds split his time between the Stars, Dundee Comets of the Scottish National League and the Dundee Stars Under 20’s team. The Scot also featured in the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 Elite League campaigns and totalled 117 games, 5 goals and 4 assists. Ben now ices with the Comets in the SNL.

Engstrom, Johan – A Swedish defenceman, who joined the Stars from. Allsvenskan league side, Pitea HC. Engstrom was a key player in the club’s 2003-2004 British National League season and in 46 matches, he scored twice and created 19 more goals. Johan retired after the 2013-2014 season and since leaving Dundee, had played in the first and second divisions of Swedish hockey.

THE OTHER STUFF

The Stars have only ever faced one team whose name begins with ‘E’, EDINBURGH CAPITALS. It has been a long running Scottish rivalry as the two teams first met in the Stars inaugural season of 2001-2002, when they both competed for the BNL.

After winning both the league and playoff trophies in the first season and the playoffs again in 2004-2005, the two teams were split up after the league folded. Whilst the Caps went into the Elite League and Dundee returned to playing in the Scottish leagues, the Stars still had some competition from the capital city.

The Capitals also had an SNL team and they would compete against the Taysiders in the SNL from 2005 until 2007 and also in the Scottish Premier League in the 2007-2008 season. However, the two sides did not meet again for another two years, when Dundee joined the EIHL and went back to facing the Caps first team.

There two teams played against each other 78 times between 2010 and 2018, as Edinburgh lost their place in the Elite League for the 2018-2019 campaign. Of the 78, the Stars were victorious on 48 occasions but only lost 28 of the remaining 29. That is because of a single draw between the clubs in the 2011-2012 season, as a Challenge Cup match ended 2-2 at the DIA.
