Welcome to this week’s instalment of the Dundee Stars A-Z series. Today, we bring you all of the players in Stars history, whose names begin with the letter ‘S’.

PLAYERS

Sacchetti, Nico – Was a leading scorer for the Stars in the 2013-2014 season and the American lit the lamp 38 times in 55 matches and finished on 81 points that campaign, for the 3rd highest points total in one season during the Stars EIHL era. Sacchetti also went on to play 33 games for the clubs rivals, Fife Flyers.

Sample, Paul – Was a Star for one season and played in 42 games of the 2002/2003 British National League campaign, scoring 9 points.

Samuel, Andrew – Switched from the Fife Flyers to the Stars in 2004 and played for two seasons with the club, before re-joining his hometown team. Samuel started in 62 games for Dundee and scored a total of 80 points in that time.

Scarsella, Vinny – Joined the Stars from Manchester Storm ahead of the 2016/2017 campaign and the American had a career best year, putting up 87 points across all competitions and a total of 62 games, for the 2nd highest points total in one season during the Stars EIHL era.

 

 

Schoenborn, Alex – Joined the Stars in December 2019 and the American’s late addition helped regenerate the squad. The North-Dakota native went on to make 14 appearances for the club and scored 3 points.

Scott, Mark – Featured in 28 games of the 2004/2005 British National League season and the former London Racer, put up 18 points that year.

Shmyr, Jason – Is fondly remember for his tough and intense playing style in the 2003/2004 and 2004/2005 seasons. The left winger played a total of 108 games across his two seasons on Tayside, accumulating 96 points and captaining the team in his second year.

Sides, Joey – Captained the team in the 2016/2017 season and recorded 48 points from 51 games, including a highlight reel lacrosse goal in Belfast.

Sjögren, Pontus – Backstopped the Stars on 64 occasions in the 2018/2019 season and the Swede was reliable every night. During his only season outside of his homeland, Sjögren posted a regular season save percentage of 90 per cent and a goals against average of 3.05.

Smith, David – Was a Star for four seasons between 2003 and 2010, playing in British National League, Scottish National League and Northern League. He made a total of 117 appearances for the club, scoring a total of 62 points, including 22 goals.

Smith, James – Iced on 46 occasions for his hometown club in the 2011/2012 season and now plays with Telford Tigers in the National Ice Hockey League.

Smith, Shaun – Appeared in 43 Elite League matches for the Stars between 2010 and 2013 and now played with Dundee Comets in the Scottish National League.

Southorn, Jordan – Made 3 appearances for the club in the 2013-2014 season before leaving and joining East Coast Hockey League side, Fort Wayne Comets.

Speirs, Duncan – Was a part of the 2019/2020 roster and the Scot picked up 4 points in 56 games for the Stars.

Stadel, Riley – Defended the Dundee blueline during the 2017/2018 season and the Canadian proved to be a reliable scorer and penalty shot-taker, scoring the winning penalty in his debut match. Stadel totalled 12 goals and 14 assists after icing in 45 Elite League games.

Stovin, Brett – Played 50 games for the Stars in the 2019/2020 season and the versatile Canadian, who can play both forward and defence, racked up 25 points, including 9 goals.

Strange, Andy – Was a Star for 7 games in the 2005/2006 season and later played for the Dundee Comets in 2015/2016.

Suderman, Matt – Played for the Stars in their inaugural Elite League campaign and scored 7 points from 61 matches. Matt moved onto to ice for Hull Stingrays in the EIHL during the 2013/14 season, icing 25 times. Matt has sadly passed away and is fondly remembered in Dundee. RIP Matt.

Sullivan, Mike – Played one season in Tayside and in his 65 appearances for the Stars, the Canadian-born-Italian scored 6 goals and 15 assists for 21 points. The former Italian Supercup Champions now works as a referee in North America and has officiated an American Hockey League match.

Svete, Ziga – Was a Star for just two games in the 2014/2015 season and now the Slovakian ices with HK Olimpija Ljubliana.

Swindlehurst, Paul – Spent two seasons with the Stars between 2013 and 2015 and the British defenseman appeared in a total of 103 games, scoring 15 points. Following an invite to the Chicago Blackhawks training camp in between his two season with Dundee, Swindlehurst has since played for other EIHL teams, including; Nottingham Panthers, Manchester Storm, Belfast Giants and Coventry Blaze.

Switzer, Brett – Was a Star for two years and formed a part of the deadly, Faryna-Lidhammar-Switzer line between 2015 and 2017. The Canadian played a total of 120 games for Dundee, scoring 36 goals and he also created 55 more.

 

 

THE OTHER STUFF

The Stars have faced a total of four teams whose names begin with the letter ‘S’ and they are SLOUGH JETS, SOLIHULL MK KINGS, SOLWAY SHARKS and SHEFFIELD STEELERS.

The Stars first met the SLOUGH JETS in the 2001/2002 BNL season and whilst Dundee won the league and playoff championships, SLOUGH finished 11th in their last BNL campaign.

The following year, the Scots then competed against SOLIHULL MK KINGS, who were the basement club that year and that was their final year in the BNL.

Next came the SOLWAY SHARKS, who went head-to-head with the Stars from 2005 to 2010 as they competed in all the same leagues as Dundee, including the SNL, Scottish Premier League and Northern League.

After the Stars joined the Elite League in 2010, they have since been matching up against SHEFFIELD STEELERS for the past 10 years.
