TRADE-MART DUNDEE STARS 3 GLASGOW CLAN 4 OT

The Trade-Mart Dundee Stars claimed one point from Saturday night’s Scottish Derby against Glasgow Clan as the Braehead club would net the winner inside the last two minutes of overtime and moved one point clear of Dundee.

The Stars would find themselves 1-0 ahead at the end of the first period as they edge in front of what was a very close battle throughout the opening 20 minutes.

The opening goal came on 16 minutes as Kyle Pouncy turned home the rebound from Spencer Naas’ effort, which had been stopped by Glasgow goalie, Landon Bow but he could not recover in time to keep out the second shot.

Dundee had outshot their rivals 19-5 in the first period but in the second, the Clan moved swiftly to tie the game up as Mitchell Heard skated onto a loose rebound and got his side off the mark, just 35 seconds after the game had restarted.

Both teams then went back to fighting for every inch but in the 32nd minute, the Taysiders were given the first powerplay chance of the night as Heard was punished for tripping foul.

Although, Marc LeFebvre’s men were unable to utilise the man advantage and did not cause the Clan too many problems, but shortly after the penalty expired, Dundee defender, Craig Moore stepped up to restore the lead.

Moore had stepped inside from the blue line and fired a long-range effort through traffic, which beat Bow down low at his left side after 34 minutes, but this advantage would be short lived.

Just over a minute later, Heard would score again as he skated the puck around the Dundee zone before releasing a low shot from distance that flew straight past everyone and into the back of Richard Sabol’s net.

The two teams were still tied at 2-2 at the beginning of the third period and Corey Neilson’s side would take their first lead of the night on 51 minutes as Heard completed his hat-trick.

The Canadian forward found his way in behind the Dundee defence and shot low under the legs of Sabol, with the puck slipping through the keeper’s grasp and into the goal.

The Stars would not be behind for long as the Clan took a third penalty of the game with Robert Lachowicz boxed for hooking and on the ensuing powerplay, Kameron Kielly would smack Brett Gravelle’s pass, out the left wing, first-time and send it straight past Bow.

With less than five minutes to play, neither side could breakthrough once more to steal both points and the win, so after 60 minutes they earned a point each before three-on-three overtime would decide who gets a second point.

Dundee had a number of chances to claim the victory but Bow denied the home team with numerous key saves, including one on Ben O’Connor who hit a slapshot with only Bow in his way and the Clan goalie’s glove got enough on the shot to turn it away.

With less than two minutes remaining of the five-minute overtime, Glasgow came forward and Darien Kielb would put the puck onto the blade of Matt Berry’s stick, which as he crossed the face of the Dundee goal, turned a shot up and into the top corner.

The extra point for the Clan finally separates the two sides as they move a point ahead of Dundee, who now sit eighth with 36 points from 40 games, which is nine clear of Manchester Storm and the fall out of a playoff spot.

Next weekend, the Stars welcome Guildford Flames to Tayside on Saturday and they can move within three points of the Surrey outfit with a win, before hitting the road to face Coventry Blaze on Sunday.
