CARDIFF DEVILS 6 TRADE-MART DUNDEE STARS 1

The Trade-Mart Dundee Stars were beaten in South Wales on Sunday night as they went down 6-1 to Cardiff Devils in the second game of their road trip weekend.

By Kris Smith

The Stars were down two bodies heading into the game as defenceman Xavier Pouliot and forward Brogan O’Brien were unavailable to play and the Devils were quick to jump on their short-benched opponents as Brett Perlini opened the scoring.

Inside five minutes of play, Perlini would finish off a four-on-two counter-attack at the back post but 10 minutes later, Keanu Yamamoto would draw the Stars level with a high finish past Ben Bowns, from the slot.

Pete Russell’s side would then rega6in their lead just 20 seconds later though as Sam Duggan followed up on a rebound and managed to squeak it through the legs of Jarrett Fiske in the Dundee goal.

In the second period, Josh MacDonald made it 3-1 as he took a loose puck and dragged it around Fiske as he tried to knock it away, with the Devil backhanding the puck into the net in the 27th minute and on 38 minutes, Kohen Olischefski would increase the Devils lead to 4-1 as he tapped home Tyler Busch’s pass to the backdoor.

The Stars were in need of a reply to help spark another comeback from three goals down and in the final minute of the second period, Tonge would bat-in a puck out of mid-air but the referees disallowed the goal for a high-stick and upheld their decision after a video review.

Cardiff then put the game out of sight in the third session as the Stars failed to capitalise on a pair of powerplays, which also allowed Busch to score a shorthanded goal on 53 minutes, before Gleason Fournier made it 6-1 in the 58th minute.

The Stars return home and prepare for their next game which sees them face their biggest rivals, Fife Flyers at home on Friday night before retuning to league play on Saturday night as they hit the road to take on Nottingham Panthers.
